The Top 3 Tips for Designing a Pet-Friendly Home
As a dog mom to two lovable fur babies, I know all too well that life with pets can be a bit messy. They are members of our family and follow us everywhere, whether it’s under our feet or snuggling on the sofa.
From shed fur to spills and wet paws, it seems that we are always chasing cleanups that put a kink in our style. I’d like to share three of my favorite tips and tricks to having a well-designed home with our beloved animals.
Tip #1: Opt for Performance Fabrics on Furniture
There are so many incredible performance fabrics on the market today. Gone are the days of the stiff, heavily treated, cardboard-like fabrics. Today, performance fabrics are soft and luxurious, and at the same time, repel liquids and dirt.
When creating a furniture plan, choose these fabrics for the cozy pieces that your pets love to curl up on. Consider selecting a color that matches your pet’s fur for extra camouflaging. Washable slipcovers are another great idea to freshen up existing furniture.
Tip #2: Choose Flooring that is Easy to Clean
Durable, easy-to-clean flooring is a must in any pet loving home. From water bowl spills to the inevitable drool, a water-resistant option is highly advised. Luxury tile that looks like real wood, or beautiful, impervious tile are perfect options. Think twice about hardwood, as it can get scratched easily from the back-and-forth of little paws, plus, it’s not recommended for wet areas.
Tip #3: Use Indoor-Outdoor Rugs for Extra Protection
For added protection to your flooring, consider using indoor-outdoor area rugs in key locations where pet activity is high. Rugs help with wear and tear and add to the longevity of your flooring. These are relatively low-cost and easily cleanable. Plus, they add extra comfort under your feet and a splash of color!
