3 Tips for Living Through a Major Home Renovation

Taking on a renovation project for your home can be a daunting yet exciting journey. All the plans and ideas that you have been dreaming about for years are about to take shape. Your home is finally getting that make-over you’ve been longing for, and you just can’t wait to see the end results.

What is the Reality of a Renovation?

Reality soon kicks in— perhaps things aren’t going as smoothly as you had envisioned. You’re second guessing your decision to even do this in the first place. Don’t worry! The reality is, this is completely normal and all part of the process.

The trick is to take things step by step to make daily progress toward your goal. There will be challenges and hiccups along the way, but those are to be expected. If you stick with it to the end, the results will be worth it and you will enjoy your beautiful transformation for years to come.

Tip #1. Maintain a Flexible, Positive Attitude

In my years of doing renovations, I’ve found that many of the challenges that arise are meant to be. You might have to pivot and make some changes due to a product being unavailable. Being unable to choose an item that you thought you couldn’t live without may lead to something you love even more! Being flexible and having a positive attitude will make things a lot less stressful and maybe even fun! Rely on your designer and the experts to guide you over the hurdles.

Tip #2. Make Adjustments to Your Lifestyle at Home

Renovations can be messy! Expect lots of dust and for people to be in and out of your house. I strongly encourage you to take that much needed extended vacation or, dare I say, stay with your in-laws for a while. If you must stay at home, consider sectioning off a part of the space for your daily tasks. For example, set up a makeshift kitchen in the garage during a kitchen renovation.  Having some normalcy to your routine is key to surviving a home renovation.

Tip #3. Believe in Your Beautiful, Finished Home

Always remember, the finished product will be the amazing space you have always imagined.  Refer back to your mood board or design plan often to stay focused and on track. Keep some of the finish, paint, or fabric samples on hand for continued inspiration. Touch base with your designer often and trust in her to produce the finished result you are dreaming about.

If you're ready to trust in the process and believe in what's possible, reach out to us. We can't wait to hear about your dreams for this renovation.

 Until next time,
