The 3 Top Tips to Know When Selecting Upholstery Fabric
When selecting fabrics for upholstery, knowing the fabric's properties is necessary to make the best selection. Fabrics can fall under two general categories, natural or synthetic. We will guide you in making the proper selections for your home when considering each individual fabric's properties.
Here are our top 3 tips for selecting the best upholstery fabric for you and your family…
1. Consider the Function of Furnishing
You must consider the function of the furniture before selecting a pretty fabric that may not be the best fit. Ask yourself, “Is the fabric durable, stain proof, and light filtering?” Once we know the answer to these questions, we will narrow down our choices to fit in with the aesthetic needs of the space.
2. Select Material Quality & Performance
A fabric's resistance to abrasion is measured and quantified in rub counts. Fabrics are tested by a machine rubbing the fabric repeatedly until it finally wears through. The amount of passes it takes to reach this point is the fabric's rub count.
For medium-use pieces, we suggest a 9,000 to 20,000 rub count. Heavy use pieces should have a rub count of 20,000 or above. Fabrics known for their durable qualities are cotton, leather, microfibre, and olefin.
