3 Easy Steps to Determine Your Unique Interior Design Style

It can take some work to nail down a design style for your home. The good news is your home’s interior doesn’t have to fit the mold of one style to keep up with the latest trends. Instead, it should reflect what makes you uniquely you, filled with memories and pieces that make you happy.

Here are 3 steps to starting to find your design style…

Step 1: Find Visual Inspiration Without Overthinking

When planning your home’s interior, start perusing Pinterest and sifting through home décor magazines. Save anything that speaks to you. The sky’s the limit! Whether it’s an accent color on a wall that catches your eye or something as simple as a uniquely shaped vase on a table, add it to your pile. Don’t overthink it. Just cut and save whatever grabs your attention.

Step 2: Determine the Similarities Between Each Image

Take some time to review the images you’ve collected. You may be surprised to see that themes have emerged. Are there any obvious patterns like similar color schemes or an affinity for a particular piece of furniture? Then, you can start grouping similar images together to see your design style begin to take shape.

Step 3: Begin a Concept Board Based on Theme & Style

Take those patterns that you discovered and arrange the images on one sheet. This will be your concept board and allow you to see everything together. I love to help my clients do this at the beginning of a project to create a design direction because it isn’t as easy as they make it look on those home renovation tv shows.

Once you have a clear concept, the entire project will be much easier because you can often refer to it to ensure you are staying on track with your design goals.

Ready to start thinking about the design of your new space? Start exploring concepts and playing with styles. I’ll be there to guide you when you are ready to get started. It takes some work upfront to set a plan, but once the project is complete, it is so worth it!
