How Long Does It Really Take to Design & Renovate Your Home?

Creating an accurate timeline is one of the most uncertain parts of a renovation project. However, a timeline is essential to establish before getting started for realistic expectations, smooth phases, and excellent results.

The average comprehensive project takes between 4-8 months. However, full renovation may take up to two years. Factors that contribute to a timeline are permits, project size, decision-making process, availability of items, and unforeseen circumstances. This is true around the country, but especially in Coral Gables and Marco Island, FL, where we have been working on our clients’ projects.

An interior designer can help you set a realistic timeline for your project. Here are the 4 phases we follow to ensure a timely remodel...

1. Conceptual Design Phase

Every project begins with a discovery call to learn more about your project. Then we schedule an in-person consultation to put together a scope of work and design fee proposal based on your wants and needs.

To get the project started, we send you a letter of agreement that outlines the work we will be doing for you.

How Long It Can Take: We start with a Conceptual Design Phase that typically lasts 4-5 weeks. This phase typically includes an initial design study, meeting with you to review the project scope and design concept, creating inspiration board(s), preliminary investment estimate, and visits to showrooms.

2. The Detailed Design Phase

To avoid unnecessary delays to the project, all materials and items should be selected and purchased early in the renovation. We handle all the ordering and coordinating for you. We make sure all the parts and pieces are ready when the subcontractors need them or when the installation occurs.

How Long It Can Take: The Detailed Design Phase typically lasts 4-5 weeks. We source and specify materials and finishes from local and online vendors during this time. (The materials and finishes are from the approved inspiration boards.) Then we prepare a presentation to share the design with you.

We also use this time to procure quotes from trades and vendors, finalize the approved floor plan(s) with actual selections, and create an investment estimate.

The investment estimate is provided under a separate cover and labeled as such, to capture the elements needed to make the project a reality.

3. The Construction Phase

During the construction process, we update you regularly. We clarify and communicate estimated delivery times, manage open orders by efficiently tracking goods, prepare the installation timeline and work with the contractor. (We have a wide network of trusted contractors throughout the Coral Gables and Marco Island areas.)

We also coordinate project logistics with trades and vendors, communicate all questions and concerns to you, and provide a specification binder to you and build-contractor team.

How Long It Can Take: We base the Construction Phase timeline on the availability of the contractor and subcontractors.

4. The Installation Phase

During the final Installation Phase, we make regular visits to the premises to meet with trades, the architect (when necessary), and you. We ensure that the project is promptly moving forward and executed according to the design.

We will also coordinate deliveries and installations with receiving warehouse and builder/general contractor.

How Long It Can Take: The Installation phase varies depending on the complexity of the project and the number of renovated spaces.

What's Next?

You may be surprised by the amount of time a project takes, but we explain all phases and update you regularly on what is going on with your project. It is all worth it in the end. We create unique spaces that they feel proud of to share with friends and family.
