3 Cabinetry Features Designers Wish You Knew About

Quality cabinets are essential for functional and aesthetic reasons. We advise our clients to obtain high-quality cabinets as these will serve them well for years. In addition, the cabinets should look beautiful and provide practical, easy-to-use storage.

Well-made cabinets have 3 features you should know about when considering your cabinetry selection…

1. Select the Correct Box Material

Designers prefer all plywood construction over particleboard for the box of the cabinet. Plywood sides and back will stay square when delivered and installed. They also better support heavy countertops and prevent damage from moisture.

2. Framed or Frameless

Face frames for cabinets can be either framed or frameless. Framed cabinets have a solid hardwood frame attached to the cabinet box. Attached to the frame are door hinges and drawer gliders.

Frameless is a full overlay. Side panels in frameless are typically thicker, allowing drawer glides and door hinges to attach directly to the cabinet sidewalls. The two methods of construction look very different and vary in installation costs

3. Designing the Door

Cabinet doors can be a partial overlay, full overlay, or inset. The full overlay covers most of the cabinet face and is used mainly with transitional or contemporary styles.

Partial overlay typically exposes 1" to 2" of the cabinet face frame. A partial overlay is commonly used for low-end new construction. The doors and drawer fronts sit inside the cabinet frame with inset cabinetry. It takes a skilled carpenter to fit the inset door or drawer inside the face frame. Inset style has been around for centuries and is associated with Shaker, Craftsman, and Mission styles.

Seek expert advice when considering investing in cabinetry. This high-use home feature requires careful design to meet your functional and aesthetic needs. Working with a professional will have an expert guide you through the myriad of decisions you need to make to ensure excellent results.
